Wedding ideas – CAKE!

The inspiration behind today’s topic stems from a conversation that crops up every time my wife and I chat about our own wedding. Firstly, we talk about what a great time we had, how fast it all went and how glad we are that we got some great pictures to remember our day (I’m sure you saw that one coming!). There’s NOTHING we would change …… what about the cake? Oh yes, we would change the cake.

Don’t get me wrong, our cake was lovely. But it was the thing we did the least research for. A cake’s a cake right? Some icing and some pretty icing sugar flowers, done. That was until, a few months later, we walked past this shop in Brighton called Choccywoccydoodah. It just blows you mind what people can do with cake design! They’re not cheap but having one doesn’t have to break the bank either. At the time of writing, a cake that serves 40 is £199. They also deliver, but the cost will depend on where you live.

Other cakes are available……

It’s likely your local wedding cake maker will also be very adept at creating any style of cake from your ideas. It’s well worth scouring the net for inspiration, and getting a quote. Below are a few of the less traditional ideas I’ve come across. The one on the far left is actually made up with layers of different cheeses!

“Budget” cakes

I’ve seen a few Cakes from one particular company over the years. Until recently, it was in one of my sample wedding albums and clients would remark on the wedding cake. It got to the point where I would tell them before they even asked. “It’s from Marks and Spencer” I would say and then we launched into a conversation about how they never know M&S did wedding cakes. Then I’d see one at their wedding. I should be on commission!

The idea for using a tower of cup cakes has really taken off over the years. It really doesn’t cost the earth and, with a little thought, a personalised design can make for a stunning display. Again it’s a fantastic conversation started for wedding guests, who don’t always know each other, as they sit down to enjoy the wedding breakfast. It’s also fun when the wedding couple get a great big cake knife for the ceremonial “cake cutting” at the end of the meal!
